Be a great guest!
You may think being a guest at someone else’s event has nothing to do with your hosting skills, but it actually affects quite a bit. How you choose to act as a party guest creates an impression of how you will run your own event. There are a few things you can do to show your hosts how much you appreciate their hospitality.
1. RSVP—just do it. I know “no one does anymore”, but that’s not an excuse. It really helps the host and shows him/her that you value the effort they are putting into their event.
2. Say thank you. Whether in a note afterwards or at the event itself, tell them how much you appreciate them. This does not mean the obligatory thank you as you walk out the door. This means pulling them aside and telling them how beautiful everything is, or toasting to them over dinner. People who say thank you get invited back, people who don’t…well…just saying.
3. If a name is not on the invitation, that person is not invited. Don’t call and ask if you can bring your kid. Was his name on the invitation? Then, no. This extends to roommates, neighbors, boyfriends and co-workers. It’s not meant as a slight; it’s just the wishes of the host. They are inviting you into their home (or venue) and if you can’t enjoy that without your second cousin, then politely decline the invitation.
When you are great guest, people will want to come to your events, will want to RSVP on time, will want to offer to bring supplies, and will be excited about your event. If you are the person who always flakes at the last minute or always shows up empty-handed, don’t be surprised when you get that behavior in return.
