Jillian’s back and hopes you enjoyed her favorite things for being out on the town. We’re pretty excited about the next installment of her new series, Jillian’s Favorite Things: clothes and accessories! We have so much to say about this topic (are you surprised?) and so we’ve divided it into two parts.
This is Part I, where we’ll discuss the essentials- sleepwear and bibs! Part II will cover everyday wear and special occasion outfits and accessories. If you don’t have a child or don’t have a girl, don’t worry. Some of Jillian’s favorites are gender neutral and the rest can be helpful when you are feting a baby girl at a shower, sip ‘n see or sprinkle. Join us throughout the weeks for updates from Jillian on her favorite things in a variety of categories.
Jillian’s Favorite Things: Apparel & Accessories Part I
1. Sleepwear- As ladies of all ages know, beauty sleep is important. Really really important. Jillian has been a pretty good sleeper, all things considered. *Mom knocks on wood.* What is the secret to her sound sleep? No doubt that there are tons of factors at play here with a dash of pure good luck, but I can tell you that as a first-time mom, we really had some great help from some awesome sleepwear.
0-3 months: All hail the swaddle.
For the first 3 months, when Jillian slept, she slept in swaddles. As all of the hospital classes, doctors, midwives, women in your life will tell you, the art of the swaddle is important. Why? It keeps the newborns and small babies tight, warm and secure, mimicking the womb. The thing is, not everyone is great at recreating the perfect swaddle with a regular blanket once they get home and their favorite nurse isn’t there to help them again. So, enter our favorite swaddle blankets by Halo and Summer Infant. These swaddle blankets are great because they idiot proof. Idiot proof is important when you’re going on no sleep for days, weeks and months at a time.
I encourage you to buy these swaddle blankets. Machine washable, cotton, affordable, breathable, idiot proof. There, they sold themselves. And if you needed another reason…they come in a variety of really cute patterns and colors.
3-5 months: Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit really is magical.
Eventually, your baby will break out of the swaddle. They will decide that they like to actually move their arms around when they sleep and you, as a parent, will be devastated. One day they are sleeping peacefully. The next day they wake up and stay up trying to wrestle out of their baby straightjackets. What to do? What to do? Enter: Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit. Y’all, this thing is worth it’s weight in gold. platinum. anything you deem valuable. As a swaddle transition sleepsuit, it helps your baby seamlessly transition from their old swaddle blankets while still keeping them secure and cozy.
Essentially, it’s heavy padding helps prevent the startle reflex from waking your baby. The first night we put Jillian in the sleepsuit also happened to be the first night we moved her to the crib (from the Rock ‘n Play). This was a terrifying day because we thought we’d never sleep again. It turned out to be the best day and she slept through the night. She continued to do so until she learned to flip over in the Merlin Suit and that’s when we moved onto the Zippadee-Zip. Read more here about knowing when it’s time to move on from the Merlin suit.
5 mo- present: Hooray for the Zipadee-Zips!
So once Jillian learned how to flip over in the Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit, we mourned again and worried if we’d ever sleep again. Where do we go from here? Enter Zipadee-Zip. Brent and I are avid Shark Tank fans and so we, of course, saw the episode with the dedicated mom entrepreneur who created the Zippadee-Zip for her own kids and was sewing each one herself! We decided to give it a try and we are still using them today!
They come in a variety of sizes, colors and patterns and are machine washable. They are breathable and will help keep your babies cool at night. We’ll keep you posted on where we go from here!
Next to sleep, eating is Jillian’s other favorite thing to do! We have a messy girl on our hands and have probably have over 30 bibs in circulation. We’ve tried every brand out there and we’ve found our favorites! Luckily for us, we live in a world where baby apparel has evolved to be both utilitarian and chic. Jillian gives the following bibs an A+.
Most Absorbent Bibs: Mud Pie Initial Bibs and Green Sprouts Fruit Bibs
These Mud Pie Initial bibs are adorable and so functional. The cotton piqué front and minky fabric back make it super absorbent and soft. We’ve also found that it’s shorter neck straps make it the best fit for smaller babies and prevent spills onto their clothes. They aren’t cheap at $15 a pop, but they are well worth the investment. Bonus points for lovely colors and timeless stripes as well as the nice packaging.
My sweet cousin sent me these amazing organic bibs by Green Sprouts. Their playful fruit designs make every outfit a bit more festive. Like the Mud Pie bibs, these bibs also have shorter neck straps and are great for smaller babies. Jillian wore these every week when she was itty bitty! I was sad to see that Green Sprouts has discontinued these bibs! Hurry over to Amazon and get yours before they run out!
Best Drool Bibs: Bandana Bibs by Mustachifier and Peter Pan Collar Bibs by Jaybird & Ro
The teething process can start very early on (think 8 weeks) and crankiness abounds. Everything you own is covered in drool and there can be multiple outfit changes per day (because who wants a cold, wet neckline)? As Chief Laundress, I can tell you that all of those wardrobe changes were making my unhappy. And when mama ain’t happy, well….. So, we remedied this problem with these fantastic drool bibs. They are so adorable and I know you will love them, too.
We were fortunate to receive two sets of these precious bandana bibs from dear friends. They have become a part of Jillian’s signature look because she wears them almost daily! They’re great for babies because their snug fit really protects the neck creases and chest from all of the drool. (It’s amazing what those neck creases can collect!) Plus, if you live in Texas like we do, then it’s pretty much appropriate year round. 🙂
I bet you didn’t think there could be anything cuter than the bandana bibs. Well, enter Jaybird & Ro’s beautiful handmade peter pan style bibs. IDOPT always loves supporting small business owners, especially on Etsy, and so I can’t say enough good things about April, the creative mind behind this Etsy shop. Her fabric choices, impeccable craftsmanship, commitment to customer service, and wonderful design aesthetic truly set her apart. Plus, when you shop Jaybird & Ro, you can feel even better knowing that 10% of your order’s proceeds will benefit the DC Diaper Bank! We love these bibs for every day use, but also for special occasions. Fellow parents, you know what it’s like to dress your baby up in a nice outfit, only to be ruined by excessive drool or a large/ugly bib. The on trend patterns and delicate silhouette coupled with the absorbent tripled-layer cotton base makes it a win-win for all.
Best for Solid Foods Award- Bumkins Waterproof SuperBib
We’re starting to explore solid foods now and Jillian usually eats her snacks in her highchair with the rest of the family! It didn’t take this FTM (first time mom) very long to figure out that cloth bibs were just not practical for purees and messy food. Luckily for us, Grandma and Grandpa gifted us some Bumkins waterproof bibs and they saved the day! They cover her entire chest and make cleanup a cinch. The pockets at the bottom are perfect for catching left over mum mums, Jillian’s favorite treat.
If the $1 store is your jam, then you’re really in luck. We love our local .99 store and we’ve found some great bibs that are also great and include a pocket feature. They also carry disposable bibs that are great for taking to restaurants and then throwing away on your way out.
Stay tuned for Part II where we cover Jillian’s favorite clothing and accessories! We hope you’ll share your favorite bib and sleepwear brands with our readers by commenting below. Sharing is caring and each comment qualifies you to win a sweet giveaway. 🙂
